There are times when my greatest desire is to drink a cup of tea without any added flavors, natural or otherwise. Simply wrapping my hands around a hot mug, allowing the aroma to tickle my nose and warm me through and through. That’s how I felt tonight as I sipped yet another cup of Hojicha.
Hojicha is set apart from other Japanese green teas because it is roasted in a porcelain pot over charcoal. The tea is fired at high temperatures, altering the leaf colour tints from green to reddish-brown. The process was first performed in Kyoto, Japan in the 1920s and its popularity persists today.
Composition: Roasted green bancha from Japan. Bancha is harvested from the second flush of sencha between summer and autumn.
Dry Visual: Reddish brown broken tea leaves resembling broken pieces of tree bark. Thanks Tantalizing Tea for the picture.
Dry Aroma: Hojicha has a heavily roasted nutty scent.
Flavor: Hojicha has a very unique yet wonderful taste. Unique in that it tastes nothing like green tea (it is not vegetal) as I initially assumed when reading the ingredients. Instead, as the dry aroma suggests, Hojicha has an amazing roasted flavor. A full-bodied liquor, Hojicha has a nutty finish. What an amazing combination.
Naturally sweet, Hojicha was never bitter and required no sweetener. I have enjoyed a cup every day this week – at times drinking a second infusion utilizing the same leaves. Cup after cup, Hojicha produces a consistent flavor without a hint of dryness. Although made of Bancha, a lower grade Japanese green tea, Hojicha is delicious.
Liquor: A rich, golden hue.
Brewing Time: It is recommended that Hojicha is steeped for 3 minutes. I steeped the recommended 3 minutes.
Manufacturer: Tantalizing Tea
